They Owe Us.

I came across this Banksy quote turned comic while surfing the web late at night. While it's not an advertisement I thought it was a still worthy of a blog post. Banksy's anonymous art work often provides social commentary like this quote.
Banksy's often dark and politically motivated street art has not only made his work famous but presented ideals like this into the millions of people's lives as his work in in cities all across the world.
This quote itself highlights the anger and resentful attitudes towards advertisers as more often then not their work is seen as pervasive and damaging. The main sentiment behind the quote obviously deals with the consumer culture we live in. Advertisers are given so much of our time and attention, and without our permission too. However, it attacks more than how intrusive advertising in the public domain is allowed yet art work like Banky's graffiti is illegal yet trying to sell nothing but a mere message and art itself.
The dichotomy between the way these two things are perceived is interesting as they both are in public spaces, yet they serve very different purposes. Advertisement's are very explicitly trying to convince you to buy something whether you necessarily wanted to or not. Where as graffiti art is often simply put out their with the sole purpose of bringing different art into the public realm. And ironically so the later is the illegal one.

Also sorry about the language.

  1. Thank you so much for posting this, Leslie. I actually meant to use this Banksy quote later in the semester--you'll remember that on the first day I passed out another Banksy piece about marketing--but I hadn't ever seen this (quite wonderful) comic rendering of the quote. It's fantastic.
