All Grown Up?

McDonald's is one of the main product companies that aim kids as its main audience for consumption. It does not put so many advertisements for all of its products, but specifically the Happy Meal. This advertisement emphasizes Happy Meals are only for children. The advertisement demonstrates certain instances, such as a boy drawing a mustache with a marker, wanting to drink his dad's coffee, and attempting to use his dad's tools, in order to look grown up like his parents. Although he seems dissatisfied at the fact that they keep on stopping him from doing all that, when he goes to McDonald's with his mother, he wants a Happy Meal. It is attracting the audience of children that they should all go to McDonald's and ask for a Happy Meal since it provides a privilege for kids like them. With this type of advertisement for kids, they will feel attracted towards it and constantly ask their parents for a Happy Meal and wanting to go to McDonald's, not knowing the unhealthiness of the food at the place.

  1. I have watched this advertisement on Youtube for tons of times! Love the way you analyze it. McDonald's is so cunning that they attack children's desire to be grown up and to have their own privileges. Children cannot understand how bad the food is. All they know is that with McDonald's, they will be privileged. Children ARE ALREADY special without that unhealthy food!

  2. This commercial is cute, attention-grabbing, and gives the viewer a feeling of satisfaction. If the viewer is indeed a child, they will most likely be more inclined to want a happy meal after watching it. I mean, I did and I'm 18 years old.

  3. I agree with what you said here, and I think the commercial is really cute. I think it is also trying to convince parents that although their kids are growing up really fast, if they take them to Mcdonalds they will be the sweet little kids they once were.

    1. I like that you also saw the second part of this commercial. It is not only the kids who are in focus, but also the parents who want to keep their children as children as long as possible and who want to make the childhood as special as possible. With the Happy Meal, at least that is what is advertised here, everybody can make special memories for only $2,99. It seems affordable to everyone and worth the time/money for a happy childhood memory.

  4. Yes this commercial is so cute that even makes me want to have one. Here, the happy meal is portrayed not just as food targeted at children but more as a precious childhood memory that a child should not miss. This marketing strategy greatly captures children as well as parents' attention and distracts them to notice that McDonald's is so bad for health.

  5. Are Happy Meals really only $2.99?!
I remember playing dress-up and wearing my mom's shoes as a child. Perhaps this commercial identifies a universal truth of children wanting to grow up fast. Because parents often want their kids to stay as kids (and never enter the teenage years), the commercial may also be directly targeting parents. By giving children McDonals, they will stay young forever.

    1. This is a brilliant commercial. While the visual focuses on the actual child at all times, I agree with Nancy that the target of the commercial are actual parents. A parent's biggest fear is for their child to grow up and Mcdonald did a wonderful job at capturing this fear while making it relatable to children. One thing that McDonalds understand is the importance of family and children but most importantly they understand exactly how to manipulate the meaning of family.
