Taking Selfie To A Whole Other Level

If you have yet seen it or even heard about it, Selfie is the new ABC tv show that aired this Fall. The show is about a woman, who is incredibly famous in all of her social networks and understands exactly how the virtual world works; she only has one issue: she has no idea how to communicate in the real world with real actual people. The entire purpose of this show is to advertise the usage of ALL social media networks, while showing how these networks can potentially ruin your life.

Because this upcoming week we will discussing about social media networks I found that this show brought a very interesting perspective to social networks---are we already forgetting how to communicate with actual humans? Is this the reality for the upcoming generation that were born into this high-tech era? Should we begin to start thinking of ways to reintruduce human interaction?

What do you think?

  1. I totally agree with you! Everywhere you can see people facing their laptops or smartphones. I mean any kinds of screens we've ever known. Even during meals or a date or a hangout, people cannot be separated from their cellphones. We are talking through Facebook, Twitter, ... more than we talk directly face to face. Sometimes, I feel it strange that I can say anything with my friends through Facebook and then absolutely nothing when we meet outside...

  2. This is the reason why so many people suffer from social anxiety today. Everyone has no issue communicating online, but when they have to say hello, they start freaking out!

  3. This is so true and such a worry of mine as well! I hate the thought of real social interaction fading away because it is such an important aspect of what makes us humans and is part of our nature. It kills me to think that primary communication could one day be done through technology.

  4. I hadn't heard of this show, but it does bring up a good point. So many people have trouble communicating with actual people or just resort to social media to meet people because it is easy. Although social media has some positives it is interesting to think about the negatives aspects of its prevalence in our generation. It is also interesting to think about how easy it is to manipulate yourself in social media, and whether or not that plays a role in why we prefer it over human contact. Ex. photoshop, and exaggerating the truth about what you are doing.

  5. I have not yet seen this show, but it seems to be very popular on Hulu. I agree that social media has changed the way we interact with each other face à face. However, it's easy to be critical. Social media has also brought together people from all over the world... without a monetary price (there are other prices to be paid). As we talked about in class, social/mass media has also influenced the decrease of kidnappings and other crimes. Sure, there are problems, but there always have been and always will be. Are we just too stubborn to adapt?

  6. I actually have been following this show since its start this year. I find it really humorous because everything in it is so relatable. People really are starting to lose touch with face to face communication. I believe it was brought up in class that people are starting to become more shy and have difficultly talking to people in person. It's so true that we have two personalities: the one we use when talking to people online and trough technology and the one we have when talking to people in person. I think both are often on opposite spectrums for people in this big technological generation now.
